School Teachers
(Band/Music/School/Professors)

This page updated February 8, 2013

In the early days, teaching was one of the few occupations that a woman could have that was acceptable.

A woman teacher must also be unmarried. Many women taught school for a few terms prior to her marriage.

Men were also, of course, teachers. The schooling process was very important to our ancestors.

They knew for their children to get anywhere in the world, they needed an education.

In many communities, there were more people working as teachers then in any other profession.

Education for these teachers most often was in taking certain courses to prepare them to teach.

There were really no formal college courses to take until later on.

Many of the students didn't speak english during the early days of our county.

Books were scarce as was the money to buy them.

Many children shared books or learned from writings on the blackboard of the teacher.

Although for some, education caused a financial burden on the families, it was still a much valued item for the parents.

They desired their children to be better then themselves..many times the parents were later taught by the children as they learned.

Schooling was most often only to a 4th grade level in the beginning--later it went on to the 8th grade level.

Few students went on to high school as there was a cost of $100.00 to be paid to the trustee in order

to obtain the certificate to attend high school.

When weighed against the lack of money and the use of another person on the farm,

it is easy to see why many homes chose to not send a student on to further education.

Below you will find a variety of the teachers that taught in the counties. Where possible I will denote just what school they taught in.

Some of the listed were professors at Depauw University; those will also be noted.

Where no notation is found, assume these to be elementary school teachers with no specialty classifications.
