Morgan County
Asylum Records

(Selected Names 1916-1929)

Page completed on July 17, 2006

The following records are by far very incomplete. It was through the research of Kathy Bargerhuff that they are available. She obtained pages/years that may contain her ancestors and sent me the rest. There were certainly more persons then the ones listed. I have tried to compile these into an easily readable format. The numbering system below has no meaning except to separate the entries for the reader.

As I am working from old records, the transcribing will take a little time. I will put forth all data that is included in the records. Most of these sheets are divided into two sections and require going back and forth to get them all accurate. It must be stressed that these are "Selected Names".

I carefully weighed the possibility that a researcher may become upset at seeing their ancestor in this location; however, I decided that it is another form of tracking your ancestors- these records could explain why someone "vanished" suddenly. If anyone should have an objection to your ancestor appearing here, please notify me and I will remove the name.

***As I have had more time to go through these records, I feel that this is NOT as first thought an Asylum for the mentally ill. This appears to be the records of a County Home for whomever was homeless at the time or perhaps an abused child. I noticed there were several children listed on their own and not with families. The truly insane appear to have been sent elsewhere. During certain time frames people would also send deaf/dumb children or children with speech impediments to these places for lack of anywhere else to go. It is possible that this also was used for babies placed up for adoption as I noticed that there is an infant that is 4 weeks of age.*****

It should be noted that many of these persons were returned to the Asylum after an initial discharge. After lining up several of the images, I find that they are not providing info/dates on the return visits, only that they returned. So therefore as necessary, I will use ** to denote the persons mentioned as returning. In that way, perhaps the researcher will have a starting point in which to look for any further information.

I have used this table simply to give you a reference for the informational divisions. Hopefully they will line up, but the symbol // will separate each one, just in case.
