We are now have the meetings on the 3rd MONDAY of the month and 6:30 PM. Please make a note of this change in the day and time!!!
Ken Anderson, local Civil War Historian
to be Guest Speaker at Monday’s OCH&GS Meeting
The Owen County Historical and Genealogical Society will have its monthly educational program this Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Owen County Public Library, located at 10 S. Montgomery Street in Spencer. The library is handicap accessible, with elevator access to the second floor. Monday’s speaker will be Ken Anderson. He formed a strong interest in the Civil War after becoming interested in his family’s genealogy and the rich history of their involvement in the war. For almost fifty years he has studied the subject with growing respect for the way in which the conflict shaped our society.
The title of the program will be “Looking Beyond the Face”. Ken describes the program in his own words: “Everyday we encounter hundreds, perhaps even thousands of people as we go about our daily business. We are surrounded by a sea of faces of people we know absolutely nothing about. Could that bent over old man we pass on the sidewalk be a veteran of WWII? The WWII vets are disappearing fast. Who is that man and does he have a story to tell? Following the Civil War, people faced the same situation that we do today. Between three and four million men and women fought in the war for the Union and millions of others were forever affected by it. But, with the exception of a few spectacular examples, who knew what stories they had to tell?”
In his program, Ken will take us on a tour of our post civil war nation to meet some of the faces on the street and learn what the stories are behind them. We will travel from Richmond, VA in the East to Concordia, KS in the West, and we will go North to Nova Scotia and South to La Porte, TX in search of the stories beyond the faces we will meet there.
OCH&GS went “dark” for 2009 due to being unsuccessful in recruiting new officers. The group continued its quarterly magazine and archival work, but did not have monthly programs. This year educational programs are being resumed and will be held the third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. (except December, no meeting). Programs are free and open to the public. The Owen County Historical & Genealogical Society is a non-profit organization formed to preserve local historical documents and artifacts, and to assist those who search for genealogical data in Owen County. If you would like to become a member, please send annual membership dues of $15.00 (check or money order) to Owen County Historical & Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 569, Spencer, IN 47460. Membership includes a subscription to the Owen County Quarterly Magazine of History & Genealogy. The annual membership dues of $15.00 helps OCH&GS publish the quarterly magazine, provide educational programs, and preserve the Owen County Archives.
See you Monday (Jan 18, 2010) at 6:30 p.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Owen County Public Library, located at 10 S. Montgomery Street in Spencer.
