Coroners & Medical Examiners

This page updated November 4, 2005

The county coroner was the man who certified the death of a person. He took information such as property on the person, where it happened, cause of death and spoke with any witnesses. For this job he was normally paid about $5.00 for the service and additional amounts for the making and filing of the report and then sometimes his mileage to and from the scene. This was also the man who sat in attendance if there was a coroner's inquest. In some areas, he was reffered to as the medical examiner. Many times this same person functioned as a funeral director as well.
