Lime Kiln/Factories

This page updated November 21, 2005

There appears to have been a major employer in the Greencastle area that was the Lime factory. This was not the same as Lime Mining; which was the actual act of mining the limestone from the earth. The factories were facilities that were able to extract and process the lime to be used for other practices.

Some Uses of Lime :-

Lime increases fertilizer efficiency. When you lime an acid soil, you raise the soil pH, raise the levels of calcium and magnesium, accelerate micro-biological activity and increase the rate of release from the soil of organic matter and nutrient elements.

Lime is reacted with crude sugar juice for the production of both cane and beet sugars.

Lime is an ingredient in baking soda and helps keep fruit and vegetables fresh.

I am not certain exactly where the Lime Factory was located but the majority of the workers resided around the Madison Township area of Putnam County.
