SALEM METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH Julia (Beem) Payne The following names and information was submitted by Mike Dean. Daniel Anderson and family lived southwest of Salem on Sec. 9. This later was the home of the William Anderson family and now the home of John Anderson and daughter. Jewell Anderson and wife who are members live northwest on Sec. 10. Southeast of Salem on Sec 13. was the home of James Adkins. Mrs Adkins and daughters are members. Benjamin Baylay and wife were for several years members of Salem. Their home was the old brickhouse at Millgrove. For a number of years William Carson and wife who were members lived just north of Salem on Sec. 11. This is now the home of Henry Mannan. George Cradick and family’s home was on Sec 15 southwest of Salem. This later became the home of W.W. Cradick and wife who were members. South of Salem on the same farm now owned by Mrs. Sophia Cradick lived for a few years Wm. Maxwell and family who were members. William Cradick, Sr. and family lived south of Salem on Sec 14. Later this was the home of James S. Evans and family, members of Salem. This is now the home of Jewell Evans and family, members of Salem. South of Salem near the old Wm. Cradick homestead was the home of Wm. M. Cradick and family. They were members of Salem. This is now the home of Charles Cradick and wife, members of Salem. George R. Dean and family were members of Salem for many years. They lived south of Salem. This is now the home of Thomas Dean. Southeast of Salem on the Gosport road probably on Sec 24 was the home of James Dean and family. They are members. The home of John Dean and family was southeast of Salem on Sec 12. This is now the home of Nicholas C. Smith and family members of Salem. Robert Dean’s family lived near Salem just west on Sec. 11. This later was the home of John G. Dean and wife, members of Salem, also of Taylor Ashley and family, members of Salem, also of George R. Dean and family members of Salem. Samuel Dean and family who were also members of Salem, lived northwest of Salem on Sec 3. Later this became the home of James Lyon, son-in-law of Samuel Dean. The church always had a loyal supporter in the person of Brother Lyon. This is now the home of Homer F. Cradick and family, members of Salem. South of Salem on Sec 14 was the home of John Dunagan. Mrs. Dunagan was a member. Martin Gillaspy lived north of Salem on the northeast quarter of Sec 35. Martin Gillaspy was I think a local preacher. John Gillaspy and wife were for many years members. Their home was on Sec 11. For several years Bingham Gray and family lived on Sec 14. I think, and were members of Salem. Near this, many years before, was the home of Thomas Hutton and family some of whom were members. Southeast of Salem on Sec 12 for several years lived Phillip Hauser and wife. Mr. Hauser was a son-in-law of James Lyon. Mrs. Hauser was a member. William Heaps, an Englishman, a traveling Bible agent and wife were members of Salem. Their home was north of Salem on the old Bloomington, Greencastle road near the James Washburn home. The home of Solomon Hetser and family who were members of Salem until about 1858 was northeast of Salem on Sec 36. Later this was the home of Bafton W. Hartsock and family, later still the home of Charles E. Hartsock and family. Northwest of Salem on Sec 10 was the home of Joseph Johnson. Mrs. Johnson and some of her daughters were members of Salem. This is now the home of Guy Cradick and wife who are members of Salem. East of Salem on Sec 6 was the home of Jesse Jones and family, members of Salem. Valentine Lyon’s family lived northwest of Salem on Sec 4. This later became the home of Jerry Devore, son-in-law of Valentine Lyon. Mrs. Devore was a member of Salem. East (West) of Salem on Sec. 6 was the home of H.S. McFarren. Mrs. McFarren and daughters were members. Southeast of Salem on Sec 11 was the home of Daniel R. McCullough. Mrs. McCullough was a member. This is now the home of Fred McCullough and wife who are members. Northeast of Salem on Sec. 1, was for a few years the home of Enoch McCullough and family. Mr. and Mrs. McCullough were members Jerry McCullough and wife live southeast of Salem on Sec 12. They are members John D. Montgomery and family were worshippers at Salem Church for a number of years. Later they changed their membership to the Disciples of Christ Church. Their home was north of Salem on Sec 2. This later became the home of Frank Montgomery, and now the home of Mrs. Frank Montgomery. Joel Richardson lived north of Salem, ( I think) on Sec 30. this later became the home of Marcus O’Rear and family after the organization of Quincy M.E. Church their membership was changed to Quincy. The home of E.G. Scott and wife who were for several years members of Salem was on Sec 3. northwest of Salem. This now is the home of Otto P. Snodgrass who is a member of Salem. The home of John S. Snodgrass and family was south of Salem on Sec 24. Later Brother Snodgrass for convenience changed his membership to Gosport. The home of James N. Steele was southwest of Salem on Sec 9. He was a son-in-law of William Payne. They were members. For many years Frederick Stierwalt was a member of Salem Church. This home was east of Salem on Sec. 12. This is now the home of Homer D. Smith and wife. (editors note: this was also known as the Asher Home “M.D“,) The home of Mrs. Ida Spangler who was a member was south of Salem about 2 1/2 miles. The home of Bert Truax was about 2 1/2 miles south of Salem. Mrs. Lillie May Spangler Truax was a member. James Washburn and family lived north of Salem on Sec 2. on the old Bloomington and Greencastle Road before it was vacated. This later was the home of Joseph Scott and wife who were members of Salem. William Washburn and wife were for a good number of years members. They lived on Sec 2. they later changed their membership to Quincy Methodist. Robert Washburn and wife were for several years members. They lived south of Salem probably 2 or 2 1/2 miles. William Payne’s’ family lived southwest of Salem on Sec 15 near the old “Ten O’clock Indian boundary Line” this later became the home of T. L. Hensley. (Editor’s note: Probably T.H.
