Samaria Cemetery

Located in Section 34, Township 12 North, Range 2 West From State Road 67 east of Whitaker go north 3.5 miles on Arthur Road. Jog left at Base Line Road, then turn left on Base Line Road. Go 0.9 mile to cemetery on the right; west of Waggoner Road.

The land for this cemetery was given by David and Hannah Gibbens who are buried here. The first building on this land was a log school house known as the Gibbens School. The building was located in the southwest corner of where the cemetery is now. Church services were also held there until later when in 1839 the present day church was built when some of the members split from the Little Mount Baptist Church in Wayne Township, Owen County. Unlike many other cemeteries in the area- many of these stones are "family stones" with multiple people listed, that is why the surnames are listed as they are. There are also many field stones here with no names on them. At one time during the 1930-1940 time frame there existed an area in the southeast section deemed "Potters Field" for the burial of indigent people.

The burials listed below are in the order of burial.

This reading was completed on March 16, 1968- however some later burials have been added through personal knowledge.
