Sewing and Knitting

This page updated November 4, 2005

Although knowing how to sew was an expected and essential skill of the women; it sometimes became a means of support for the family. In the days when a "working woman" was unheard of, widows with small children needed some way of making money to feed those children. Sewing or knitting allowed them to remain "feminine" but yet able to provide. It must be stressed that this "Sewing" Category is kept separate from the Dressmakers or Seamstresses as most times, those persons worked for others or outside the home. The "Sewing Woman" tended to live removed from the larger town and she performed this service for neighbors.
