VANDALIA METHODIST CEMETERY

LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP

Cemetery visited weekend of August 10th, 2002

This cemetery is well on it's way to being ruined. Many of the stones are still standing, but it is very overgrown, and many stones have fell over. It is on a hillside, and gravity has taken its toll on many of the graves. Lots of plantings (yucca) are taking over, along with poison oak. We tried to upright a few stones tomake out what they said, but they were way to heavy for us to budge. Someonehad been there to mark the vets graves with flags, but looks like that was probably the last time anyone was there. We were looking for the grave of Thomas Townsend, but never found it. It doesn't look like the site had been vandalized, just everything seems to be falling down the hill. We plan on going back in the fall, when everything dies back some, in hopes that we can find Thomas' grave. If anyone wants me to look for one of their relatives there, let me know and I'll be glad to.
